9/8 – Wyatt

We learned about Wyatt years before Tillery was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Wyatt’s second grade teacher attended our church and would lift him in prayer every single week. It was amazing to see the faithfulness of his teacher and Wyatt’s story touched our hearts. When our own daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few years later, we immediately contacted Mrs. Wolfe and asked her to put us in touch with the family we had been praying for for many years.

Wyatt was diagnosed with a pilocytic astrocytoma (brain tumor) in December 2011 when he was just 7 years old. Wyatt’s family has done a lot of research and become very knowledgeable about brain tumors in general and specifically Wyatt’s type of tumor. Their research even led them to Nationwide Hospital in Washington DC to consult with Dr. Roger Packer, the leading researcher for pilocytic astrocytoma. Wyatt has had multiple hospitals review his case and has had 2 craniotomies to remove his tumor and an EVT to relieve hydrocephalus fluid as well as 42 doses of chemotherapy. He still struggles with balance and other issues as a result of his tumor and treatments.

Today, Wyatt celebrates his 13th birthday! Birthdays are extra special after a cancer diagnosis, when you realize that birthdays aren’t always promised.  We are so thankful to call Wyatt our friend and to be able to wish him a happy birthday today. It’s because of his story and talking with his family that we did not feel so alone when Tillery was diagnosed. Because Wyatt shared his story, we had a survival story of hope to cling to when days were really hard. Wyatt isn’t just a cool kid, he’s our hero!
